1944년 이란 태생
이란에서 태어나 프랑스 파리로 이주한 사진작가 압바스는 여러 사회의 갈등과 충돌에 관한 정치사회적 다큐멘터리 작업에 매진해 왔다. 1970년 이후 그의 주된 작업은 비아프라(역자 : 아프리카 Nigeria 동부의 지방 ; 1967-70년 일시 독립), 방글라데시, 북 아일랜드, 베트남, 중동, 칠레, 쿠바에서의 전쟁과 혁명,그리고 남 아프리카 공화국의 민족 격리 정책( 역자 : apartheid - 남아공화국의 흑인 또는 기타 유색 인종에 대한 차별 정책; 1993년 폐지)의 실상을 다루는 것이었다.

압바스의 종교에 대한 관심은 2000년 Animism( 역자 : 모든 자연계의 사물에 영혼이 깃들어 있다는 원시 세계관) 프로젝트로 그를 이끌었고, 비 합리적인 종교의식이 어떻게하여 과학과 기술로 대변되는 현대 시대에 재 출현하는가를 밝히기 위해 노력했다. 그러나 911 사태 1주년이었던 2002년에 그는 이 기획을 폐기하고 현대 사회에서의 전략적 투쟁에 대한 정치적 이데올로기를 대체한다는 신념하에 -신앙적 믿음 보다는 문화적인 측면에서- 종교적 충돌에 대한 길고 긴 프로젝트에 몸을 담기 시작했다.

이 작업은 2007년 완료되었고 압바스는 현재 불교 국가를 여행 중이다. 여전한 회의적 시각으로 뷰파이더를 바라보며.
압바스는 1971년 부터 1973년 동안 Sipa(역자 : 프랑스의 프레스 에이전시)의 멤버였으며 이후 1974년과 1980사이에는 Gamma(역자 : http://www.gammaphoto.co.uk/index.html 참조)에서 활동하였으며 1981년 매그넘에 가입하였으며 1985년 부터 정식 멤버로 활동 중 이다.
